Our Story
The Poetry of Matter — where the human hand meets the earth's clay.
Afis Yfes: The Poetry of Matter
At Afis Yfes, we believe that the objects we live with should do more than just fill a space. They should engage our senses and keep us present in the moment.
The essence of our brand lies in the dialogue between Afis and Yfes — the touch and the texture. At the heart of both words is the letter φ, the symbol of the Golden Ratio. This ancient Greek principle of harmony quietly guides every form we create, ensuring a natural balance in our work.
We explore the deep connection between the human hand and the earth’s clay, creating a tactile experience that challenges the digital flatness of our era. Our design language sits at the intersection of architectural minimalism and organic storytelling. We do not merely shape clay; we curate the tactile skin of each object, inviting a touch that connects the maker with the beholder.
The Art of Precision
The Human Touch
Every piece is born from a slow, deliberate process of hand-building and sculpting. We bypass the uniformity of industrial molds to ensure that each object retains the unique energy of its creator. Working in tandem, we ensure that every form has been refined by both our eyes and hands.
Sgraffito & Engraving
We spend hours on each surface, hand-drawing intricate lines and textures while the clay is in its "leather-hard" stage. This requires unwavering precision and a deep understanding of the material's drying rhythm.
Alchemical Surface Design
Our studio develops custom engobe recipes using metal oxides that interact with the clay to achieve specific colors and effects, making each piece impossible to replicate twice.
Structural Sculpting
Especially in our lighting and candleholder series, we push the physical limits of clay, creating gravity-defying, organic curves that maintain structural integrity through expert firing techniques.
"We don't just manufacture; we compose. Each stroke of the brush and each incision in the clay is a deliberate decision, making the craftsmanship the true protagonist of our work."
Our Ethical Approach
Sustainability is not an afterthought at Afis Yfes; it is baked into our process. In a world of "fast decor," we advocate for Slow Design.
Zero Waste Philosophy
Our circular production model ensures that every scrap of clay is reclaimed and reintroduced into the process. Broken or imperfect pieces are ground into grog and reused, closing the loop on waste.
Responsible Sourcing
We source our clays locally whenever possible, reducing the carbon footprint of our materials and supporting regional suppliers who share our values.
Emotional Longevity
We create heirloom objects designed to be cherished for generations, not discarded after a season. By investing in emotional longevity, we encourage conscious consuming.
“In our studio, a piece is never finished until it has spoken to both of us. It is this double filter of intuition and craft that defines Afis Yfes.”
Anna & Maria
The identity of Afis Yfes was born from a shared necessity for creative expression and a profound reverence for ceramic art. As artists, our practice is defined by a unique equilibrium: the creative tension between artistic intuition and analytical precision.
Our background in Economics and Management is a vital and ongoing foundation. It provides the discipline and structural rigor that our ceramic practice demands today — from the intricate chemistry of our engobes to the complex architectural challenges of our hand-sculpted forms.
Our apprenticeship under the traditional pottery master, Michalis Sklavenas, instilled in us a deep respect for the ancient roots of the craft. We later evolved this heritage into a contemporary vision at the Study Center for Modern Ceramics in Athens.
Today, every Afis Yfes piece is brought to life through a continuous four-handed dialogue. We personally oversee every heartbeat of the process — from the raw, unshaped clay to the final transformation of the firing — ensuring a fusion of high aesthetics and structural excellence.
